Leading today: Boulder’s longtime community radio station, KGNU, officially opened its new permanent downtown home Friday, marking a major milestone nearly five decades after CU students and local volunteers founded the station as an alternative to commercial media. Station leaders say the move will expand KGNU’s visibility and space for events, broadcasting and community engagement. Brooke Stephenson reports, with photos by Jeffrey Packard.

Also today, in BRL Opinion: As Boulder County’s trail-use pilot debate intensifies, mountain bike advocate Rex Madden argues the proposal unfairly targets cyclists without clear safety or ecological evidence.

And if you missed Nibbles last week (sign up here), John Lehndorff profiled East & Co., a new restaurant aiming to make Boulder’s Flatirons Business Park more of a dining destination. The newsletter also featured other restaurant openings.

More rain ahead as Boulder drought conditions improve

It should be a mostly pleasant Memorial Day, with sunshine and highs in the low 80s before afternoon showers and thunderstorms become possible. Overnight lows will dip to the mid-50s as clouds increase.

Tuesday looks warmer and breezier, with highs around 80 and a chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Wednesday brings mostly cloudy skies and a higher likelihood of afternoon precipitation.

After a brutally dry winter, Boulder is finally seeing some meaningful moisture. As of May 19, the area had received more precipitation in the previous two weeks than in the prior four months combined, according to BoulderCAST. Recent storms have begun easing drought conditions, with much of Boulder County now classified in severe drought rather than extreme drought, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor maps.

Eldo shuttle joins Chautauqua and Hessie summer service lineup

Free shuttle service to Eldorado Canyon State Park, Eldorado Springs Pool, Marshall Mesa, Doudy Draw and South Mesa trailheads is now running on weekends and holidays through Sept. 13, joining the seasonal Chautauqua and Hessie shuttle routes already underway across Boulder County.

The Eldo Shuttle operates from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the U.S. 36 & McCaslin Park-n-Ride, with buses arriving about every 20 minutes through Sept. 7. Service shifts to every 30 minutes during the final weekend of operation.

The shuttle program is intended to reduce traffic and parking congestion in Eldorado Springs and at the state park during the busy summer recreation season.

The free Park-to-Park shuttle to Chautauqua and the Hessie Trailhead shuttle also returned this weekend, offering expanded transit access to some of Boulder County’s busiest outdoor destinations.

Passengers 16 and older traveling into Eldorado Canyon State Park must carry a valid Colorado State Parks pass or Keep Colorado Wild pass. Climbing gear, including backpacks and crash pads, is allowed onboard.

Primaries: Deadlines to know and ballot tests

Colorado’s primary election is June 30, and in heavily Democratic Boulder County, the primary often determines the winner of local races. This year’s ballot includes several competitive contests, including races for CU regent and Boulder County treasurer. You can follow BRL’s ongoing election coverage here

Voters registered with a political party will only receive ballots for their affiliated party. Officials recommend changing party affiliation by May 26 to ensure voters receive the correct ballot, though the final deadline to switch parties is June 8. Voters who change affiliation later may still initially receive a ballot for their previous party. Residents can check registration status, party affiliation and ballot information on Boulder County’s election website.

Boulder County will conduct its public logic and accuracy test for voting equipment on June 2, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Ballot Processing Center at the Clerk & Recorder’s Office.

Vote centers open June 22, which is also the final day to register and still receive a ballot by mail. It is also the last recommended day to return ballots by mail; after that, officials recommend using a ballot drop box instead.

On Election Day, June 30, vote centers and ballot drop boxes will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

63rd and Jay intersection to close May 26 for final paving work

The intersection at 63rd Street and Jay Road will fully close for one day tomorrow, May 26, as crews complete repaving tied to Boulder’s 63rd Street Waterline Replacement Project, which is aimed at upgrading the city’s drinking water infrastructure.

The closure marks one of the final major phases of the project, though intermittent single-lane closures in the area are expected to continue into mid-June.
